Job Description
This Senior Histologist position operates and maintains microtome and tissue processing equipment to provide optimum quality tissue slides for use with proprietary technology, and assists with quality management and inventory duties as assigned. Duties include, but are not limited to, organizing workload, accessioning specimens, tissue embedding, grossing, sectioning, staining, and region of interest (ROI) determination based on client requests. The Senior Histologist follows all safety, environmental, and infection prevention policies and complies with regulatory and accreditation requirements. The Senior Histologist also trains and/or provides guidance to the histology team on day-to-day processes and duties.

- Maintenance and routine use of the microtome to generate FFPE slide sections
- Proficient at independently recognizing and preparing slides containing client-specified regions of interest (ROI) on tissue sections, especially mouse brain regions
- Attend client calls as needed and provide guidance on biological sample preparation (e.g. proper grossing for easy ROI identification)
- Identify potential issues with received tissue materials and communicate with clients on resolution
- Re-gross and re-embed tissues for FFPE block generation as needed
- Perform H&E staining and scanning
- Train other Histology members on job-related functions
- Occasional maintenance and use of the cryostat to generate frozen tissue sections
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as medical technology or a life science.
- Histology certification by ASCP preferred
- 5 or more years of histology experience in a work setting
- Able to correctly identify and prepare client-requested regions of interest (ROI) on tissue sections
- Expertise in tissue grossing and embedding
- Prior experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training of histologists preferred
- Ability to handle projects involving large volume sectioning with tight turnaround times
- Excellent attention to detail and be able to work with precision and accuracy.
- Must be able to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Average volume of at least 1,000 to 2,000 usable sections monthly
- Work in a laboratory environment
- Work with chemicals, biological specimens, and potentially infectious materials
- Standing or sitting at a microscope for long periods of time, working with small instruments and tools.
- Ability to lift 10-15 lbs. daily
