Job Description
This position serves as one of the cell culture scientists within the Cell Culture Product Development team. The role requires strong mammalian cell biology and molecular biotechnology aptitude, particularly related to virus production including VERO, MDCK, CHO and HEK293 or similar cell types. A successful candidate must have practical experience working in a commercial setting where adaptability to changing priorities is required. In addition, attention to budgets, timelines, and critical path planning are required for success.
The candidate will work closely with other scientists in cell therapy product development. The position reports to the Vice President, Product Development.

Essential Responsibilities
- Perform standard cell culture and use transfection protocols to generate viral vectors and vaccine candidates.
- Design of mammalian and viral expression vectors and virus quantification; lentiviral and AAV preferred.
- Perform AAV manufacturing process development and maintain cell lines.
- Provide expertise for applications with products into customer workflows during customer meetings (TEAMS and on-site) in collaboration with ProApps Account Owners.
- Present benefits and utility of products at trade shows.
- Publish journal articles and develop posters for content generation that drives new leads.
- Perform routine functional (cell-based) assays on existing and new products.
- Run and report results from cell expansion in flasks and in bioreactors.
- Optimize virus yield using recombinant albumin in process buffer formulations.
- Optimize virus stabilization in final formulation using recombinant albumin and other factors.
- Stay current with scientific advancements in virology, virus purification and filtration, and development of producer cell lines for gene therapy.
- Develop a producer cell line to streamline gene therapy workflows and combine with products to create a turnkey solution for customers.
- Develop and perform analysis using standard molecular biology and biochemistry methods including PCR, ddPCR, Flow Cytometry, ELISA, and other immunohistochemistry methods;.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of key technologies and instruments for cell line development and characterization.
- Compile in process data to identify trends and assist in troubleshooting to resolve any problems.
- Maintain a high degree of laboratory and quality standards to ensure strong product quality, documentation, and a safe work environment.
- Assist with laboratory support work such as: routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, raw material stocking, simple SOP or protocol updates, etc.
- Analyze and interpret data, prepare cogent data summaries, and communicate results to team members.
- Be highly motivated, highly organized and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Comply with all safety training and good laboratory practices.
- Design and guide complex experiments and projects using a wide application of complex principles, theories, and concepts.

Qualifications/Experience

- A Ph.D. Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Virology or related field is preferred. A BS with 5+ years of lab experience in a commercial organization is also acceptable. Example labs would include: Thermo-Fisher (Frederick, MD), Novartis (Illinois/Colorado/North Carolina), Athersys, Gilead (Kite), Atara Therapeutics, Spark Therapeutics, or similar company.
- Strong molecular biology (PCR, molecular cloning, RNA extraction and analysis) skills.
- Virology, virus propagation, characterization, and molecular cloning to generate new viruses
- Cell culture, flow-cytometry, molecular modeling, protein characterization, immunohistochemistry
- At least two of the following skillset: molecular cloning, virology, biochemistry, genetics, gene expression, and cell biology.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with the Microsoft Office 365 suite of products, including Outlook, Sharepoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with statistical analysis or optimization software to develop and execute using a design of experiments approach.
- Experience presenting technical information to large groups.
- A right to work in the USA without sponsorship.
