Job Description
Our biopharma client is looking to add a Lead Scientist – Plant Genetics & Breeding, to their team on a permanent basis.

- Utilize data-driven screening of genetic and phenotypic characteristics to select parent seed varieties (rice and barley) for optimal performance in molecular biology (efficiency and yield) and field production (yield) in Kansas.
- Introduce, develop, and initiate new phenotyping technologies for both field and greenhouse settings.
- Establish marker-assisted breeding technologies and evaluate CRISPR, ZFNs and TALENs for use in establishing new parent seed varieties for optimal phenotypes.
- Work with Molecular Biology to design parent seed lines and calli lines for use in genetic engineering.
- Establish high purity and high-quality Master Seed Banks for genetically modified barley and rice, while also maintaining redundancy with dual location storage.
- Supply cleaned and prepared rice and barley Working Seed Banks for planting by Grain Production team to meet key success metrics.
- Germination Rate Target
- No cross-product contamination
- Seed available in time for planting without delay
- Field production yields > or = to target
- Supervise greenhouse operations and reduce time from gene to R4 seed.
- Manage budget vs. actual expenses
- Maximize seed yield
- Minimize time to maturity
- Utilize data-driven modeling for greenhouse operations and facilitate improved productivity and timelines.
- Effectively communicate and build a shared commitment with Molecular Biology, USDA Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Sales & Marketing and Finance regarding product planning, operational objectives and results.
- Author greenhouse and nursery electronic reports to measure, document, and institutionalize lessons learned, successes and failures to improve operations.
- Create a high-performance team-oriented culture that attracts and retains the best talent.
- Conduct work with high levels of commitment and energy.
- Set clear roles and expectations for self and direct reports.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Plant Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, Genomics or related science discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in plant breeding in cereal grains. Prefer candidates with experience in self-pollinating cereal grains such as barley or rice.
- Experience with marker assisted selection.
- Experience with greenhouse and nursery production operations a plus.
- High integrity and entrepreneurial spirit with a sound work ethic and commitment to make a positive difference.
- Data-driven with strong statistical analysis.
- Can-do attitude with tenacity and willing to experiment with new equipment and methods.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
