Job Description


The Laboratory Operations Technician’s primary focus is support of the Pharmaceutical Development team in routine maintenance, setup, and sampling of cultured cells for growth in bioreactor systems.

The Technician will prepare media and buffers, clean and assemble bioreactors, thaw and maintain cell cultures, and perform sampling throughout the process.   In addition, the Technician will perform routine lab services including maintenance of equipment, collection of hazardous materials and waste, glass and other lab equipment washing and sterilization.

The Technician must be able to perform work independently and as part of a team member to ensure all responsibilities are completed in a timely manner and per standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare media and buffers
  • Generate and maintain labeling and documentation of reagent and media lots
  • Perform filtration, aseptic technique, and aliquoting of media and solutions
  • Perform quality control of media and buffers
  • Assess glassware and auxiliary equipment for cleanliness and integrity
  • Assist with planning and scheduling of experiments as requested
  • Conduct bioreactor setup including calibrating probes, connecting/welding tubing, and connecting agitators
  • Document information for each batch run including operating conditions, agitation, airflow, VVM, temperature, and p
  • Operate routine laboratory equipment including balances, pH meters, osmometers, spectrophotometer, mixers, stainless steel tanks, pressure systems, and gas analyzers
  • Perform bioreactor cleaning including disassembly, hand washing, and proper cleaning and storage of probes
  • Monitor and maintain cell culture samples per established protocols and standards
  • Thaw and passage cell cultures
  • Perform cell culture sampling and maintain records and logbooks
  • Glass washing and autoclaving
  • Routine equipment maintenance of bioreactors, incubators, freezers, etc.
  • Order laboratory supplies and materials
  • Collect hazardous waste for disposal

Requirements / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree and 3+ years previous experience in a scientific laboratories in a university or industrial research environment
  • Well versed in cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Ability to execute duties with a high attention to detail and to adjust workload based on priorities
  • Must have exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Ability to work independently and be proactive with a can-do attitude
  • Ability to read, interpret, and comply with documents such as internal SOPs, operating and maintenance instructions, and company policies
  • Must be comfortable with biological specimen handling
