Job Description

Note: Remote Role in Europe - Must be based in/near Berlin or Frankfurt, Germany; London, or in Switzerland.

The Business Development Director will lead strategic initiatives to drive new client acquisition, expand existing customer relationships, and grow revenue for the CDMO. This role requires a deep understanding of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to translate technical capabilities into client solutions.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Strategic Planning & Market Analysis:
  • Develop and implement business development strategies aligned with corporate goals.
  • Analyze market trends, competitive landscape, and client needs to identify growth opportunities.
  • Recommend new services, capabilities, and market segments for expansion.
  • Client Acquisition & Relationship Management:
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key stakeholders in biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective and existing clients.
  • Proposal Development & Contract Negotiation:
  • Lead the preparation of proposals, bids, and presentations for potential clients.
  • Negotiate commercial agreements, pricing, and terms to maximize profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements during contract execution.
  • Collaboration & Internal Coordination:
  • Work closely with technical teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory) to develop client solutions.
  • Ensure seamless handoff from business development to project management upon contract award.
  • Provide market intelligence to internal teams to support service improvement and innovation.
  • Revenue Growth & Financial Management:
  • Drive revenue growth through new business and expansion of existing accounts.
  • Prepare sales forecasts, pipeline reports, and strategic plans for executive leadership.
  • Monitor project profitability and provide recommendations to improve financial outcomes.
  • Leadership & Team Development:
  • Mentor and guide business development managers and staff.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and high performance.
  • Industry Engagement & Representation:
  • Represent the company at conferences, trade shows, and networking events.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies.
  • Position the company as a preferred partner in the CDMO industry.
    Job Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
    • 8–12+ years of experience in business development, sales, or account management in a CDMO, pharmaceutical, or biotech environment.
    • Strong understanding of drug development processes, cGMP manufacturing, and regulatory requirements.
    • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets and closing complex deals.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
    • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate technical capabilities into business solutions.
    • Ability to travel as required for client meetings and industry events.

    • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
    Work Environment:  
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a home office environment.  The Employee frequently works at client locations and frequently is required to travel by airplane and automobile. 
    • Travel is estimated at 50%- 60%. 
    • The work environment is fast-paced and demanding. 
    • Off-shift, weekend, and overtime duties may be required as assigned.
