Vice President of Clinical Operations

Our client is looking to add a Vice President  of Clinical Operations to their team on a permanent basis. Reporting to the SVP, Clinical Research, the person in this role supervises and manages the Clinical Operations team of 14 people  to ensure the timely execution of clinical trials. The VP of Clinical Operations also works collaboratively with other members of the Clinical Project Team.

  • Plans for Clinical Operations staffing based on clinical trial workload
  • Supervises hiring of Clinical Operations staff
  • Adjusts Clinical Operations staff assignments as needed to meet clinical trial timelines and to adjust to changes in clinical trials and clinical trial workload
  • Ensures that Clinical Project team timelines for study conduct are met, and that any changes that impact timelines are communicated to the Clinical Project team and to management. Works proactively to identify problems with study conduct and provide solutions.
  • Manages Clinical Operations staff including staff assignments, reviews, pay increases, development and promotions
  • Works with CROs as needed to contract for temporary staffing or for capabilities not available at company
  • Manages Clinical Operations budget and regularly reviews budget projections against actual spend
  • Ensures that Clinical Operations SOPs reflect current Clinical Operations practices
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the Clinical Project Team including Data Management, Drug Supply, Regulatory and Pharmacovigilence.
  • Travels to New York City office as needed to facilitate close communication between Clinical Operations and other drug development groups.
  • Participates actively in Project Team meetings.
  • Works closely with Senior Management to coordinate clinical trial planning with budgets


  • BS/RN/RPh degree
  • MS degree with 5+ years of clinical operations experience, with experience in different clinical areas
  • Previous experience managing direct reports
  • Experience working on clinical trials with wide range of therapeutic areas
  • Strong leadership, planning and project management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications and presentation skills
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to contribute creative, practical solutions to problems
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time
