Job Description

The Senior Director, Program Management is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of major company-wide product development and other relevant programs ensuring consistency with business strategy, commitments and goals. This includes defining, identifying and securing appropriate internal and external resources and coordinating the efforts of internal team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan.

Essential Functions:

Key responsibilities:
  • Leads a clinical development program 
  • Leads the project management team and creates the overall strategy, systems and processes for centralizing project management activities to ensure efficiency and coordination

Specific expectations:
  • Builds strong working relationships across the organization and works with stakeholders to understand their priorities to ensure that they are represented correctly.
  • Balances ownership of and involvement in multiple streams of work simultaneously.
  • Ensures application of efficient work practices for team processes and ensures continuous improvement and update of these practices
  • Develops capabilities and team needed for successful program management across pipeline
  • Drives improvements in program management processes, tools and infrastructure to ensure ongoing efficiency across the R&D organization and company-wide.
  • Obtains agreement on project / program definitions, scope, and priorities
  • Ensures all projects / programs have thorough business cases with measurable benefits and costs.
  • Defines project / program tasks and resource requirements and develops full scale plans.
  • Assembles and coordinates program teams, ensures all resources required for success are available
  • Presents plans and updates to senior management stakeholders.
  • Tracks and manages project deliverables using appropriate tools.
  • Provides status reports defining project progress, problems and solutions.
  • Manages project budget and conducts project evaluations and assesses results.
  • Ensures that proper risk management analysis is performed and plans are in place for all projects.
  • Ensures that programs stay on plan by resolving resource conflicts and removing obstacles, which may involve negotiating at a senior level.
  • Implements and manages project changes and interventions to achieve project outputs.

Requirements / Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’ s degree in Engineering, Science or Business is required. MBA or other Master’ s degree or Ph.D. preferred.
  • PMP Certification preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of program / project management experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, including clinical-stage development programs
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a corporate program management function
  • Proficient in MS Project, or equivalent project management tools and software
  • Proven track record of success in program / project management, including managing others and / or providing central PMO facilitation to others
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Experience creating and actively managing integrated timelines and budgets
  • Thorough understanding of the drug development processes
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities under tight deadlines
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple diverse cross-functional teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
